Myth of the Scary Black Rifle

Meet the AR-15

The most popular rifle in the United States, the ArmaLite 15, or AR-15, was designed in the 1950’s. It is the semi-automatic civilian version of the fully-automatic M16 used by the U.S. military. It is often singled out because of it menacing appearance, when in reality it’s no more capable or dangerous than a ranch rifle.

Murders by Weapon

Rifles as a whole, of which the AR-15 is an even smaller subset, are used very little in crime.  On average, 3% of all murders by firearm are with a rifle[1]
